About
We have a cluster of seven special schools from Ipswich, Goodna, Inala, Mt Omaney and Fig Tree Pocket that participate in up to four interschool sports carnivals and gala days each year at various venues in our region. The events are held throughout the year and most often run over more than one day. These sporting events can attract up to 450 students, staff and spectators.
The schools in our sports cluster cater for students with intellectual, physical, emotional and other associated impairments from Prep to year 12. Most schools are in a low socio-economic area and have a high percentage of indigenous and/or multicultural students. Many students are from one parent families or are in foster care.
Our sports events are arranged as mixed gender events with the aim of encouraging maximum participation through friendly competition regardless of ability. Our focus is on each student’s ability not their disability. For most students these sporting events provide the only opportunity for them to participate in a sport in a competitive and fun environment.
Students are encouraged to wear their school colours at each event, and they are always proud to be able to slip on a team outfit and represent their school at interschool competitions. The outfits that are being sourced will be used by the schools at each of the sporting events they attend and will help to foster a sense of belonging, teamwork and pride during the events.
